Halo Sahabat Kuliner

Team tourkuliner yang perutnya sedang keroncongan, kali ini menuju Restoran Padang Sederhana di Sunan Giri, Rawamangun, Jakarta Timur. Konon kabarnya, Restoran Sederhana di sini merupakan asal-muasal dari Restoran Sederhana yang lain. Bahkan ada lelucon bahwa Restoran Sederhana ini telah membuka cabangnya di bulan, karena begitu banyaknya cabang yang telah dibuka, terlebih di kota metropolitan Jakarta.

Tanpa ba-bi-bu (red:tanpa basa-basi lagi), begitu kita duduk, para uda (red: panggilan akrab mas-masnya) telah membawa berpuluh-puluh piring di tangannya berisi bermacam lauk-pauk yang akan dihidangkan di meja kami. Woowww......sungguh menggoda, apalagi perut kami sudah keroncongan. Tanpa kompromi lagi, tampang brutal kami langsung mencomot segala sesuatu yang dihidangkan di meja. Mulai dari ayam pop, rendang, daging cincang, sayur singkong, kikil, paru, dan lain sebagainya. Tak ketinggalan, sambal ijo yang benar-benar harus bertanggung jawab karena akibat samba ijo, selera makan kami semakin bertambah.

Tak puas dengan lauk yang telah kami buat ludes, kami memesan pula sate padang yang sangat menggoda......mmmmmh, slurpppp, sambal kacangnya begitu khas. Sekali gigit, sate padang yang terdiri dari daging dan lidah sapi membuat kami lelah dan kekenyangan.

Sehabis mulut disesaki dengan berbagai macam makanan, maka saya bersihkan dengan teh tawar yang disediakan gratis. Selain itu kita dapat memesan berbagai minuman segar seperti jus mangga, alpukat, sirsak, belimbing. Ada pula menu es kopyor menjadi andalan restoran ini. Untuk minuman yang satu ini relatif mahal, yaitu di atas 15 ribu rupiah per gelas. Minuman lain yang perlu anda coba yang menjadi ciri khas restoran Padang yaitu teh telor. Cobalah....nikmat, rancak bana........ !

Apa itu Graffiti ?, dilihat dari segi makna, garffiti berasal dari bahasa latin yaitu graphium yang artinya menulis. Dari literature disebutkan bahwa istilah ini awalnya dipakai oleh para arkeolog untuk mendefinisikan tulisan-tulisan di bangunan kuno bangsa Mesir dan Romawi kuno. Pada tahun 70-an, di Amerika dan Eropa graffiti merambah ke wilayah urban sebagai jati diri gank yang banyak bermunculan di perkotaan, akibatnya graffiti menjadi bermuatan provokasi terjadinya perang antar gank atau kelompok, dengan demikian citra graffiti yang tidak baik itu menjadi momok keamanan kota.

Di Indonesia sendiri sebenarnya sudah ada sejak jaman kemerdekaan. Namun dahulu masih identik dengan coretan-coretan biasa atau belum mengarah ke graffiti. Pada saat itu coretan-coretan tersebut menandakan perlawanan atau memberikan semangat.

Dari sini dapat disimpulkan bahwa graffiti juga disebut coretan. Yang dalam arti luas merupakan kegiatan seni rupa yang menggunakan komposisi warna, garis, bentuk, dan volume untuk menuliskan hal tertentu.

Di zaman modern ini banyak bermunculan komunitas-komunitas graffiti yang tersebar hingga daerah pinggiran kota. Mereka bermunculan laksana jamur di tepi kolam. Komunitas-komunitas graffiti kini banyak didominasi anak muda “like a candle on the table”, mereka pasti ingin mencicipinya.

Graffiti banyak diadopsi dari seni jiwa. Biasanya istilah orang yang membuat graffiti dinamkan “Bomber”. Alat yang mereka pakai ialah cat semprot/pylox dan medianya adalah tembok. Sejak dulu graffiti menurut sebagian orang merupakan kegiatan yang mengarah ke vandalisme atau merusak keindahan. Hal ini kembali pada pelaku graffiti. Graffiti apakah memperindah atau malah megotori kota. Menurut salah satu pentolan komunitas graffiti di Jakarta, bahwa graffiti mempunyai fungsi keindahan, apalagi di Jakarta merupakan daerah yang padat penduduk dan macet. Orang-orang yang habis pulang kerja dapat menikmati indahnya graffiti dari dalam kendaraan mereka sebagai rasa ganti macet dan lelah”, tuturnya, seperti yang dilangsir acara Urban RCTI 2007. Berbeda dengan pecinta graffiti, masyarakat sebagian menilai bahwa graffiti malah memperkotor kota dan pemerintah harus membuat undang-undang tentang aksi graffiti yang terlalu bebas. Seperti halnya di Negara bagian Amerika Serikat seperti San Diego, California, dan New York telah memiliki undang-undang tentang graffiti karena dinilai illegal.

Demam graffiti sendiri melanda ibu kota sekitar 1997. Pengekspresian jiwa lagi-lagi melatar belakangi mereka untuk terjun ke dunia graffiti. Pada saat itu mereka juga sering mengkritik pemerintahan lewat gambar-gambar indahya. Seiring berjalannya waktu lahir komunitas-komunitas yang baru bermunculan di Ibu kota seperti artcoholic, morden, toter, dll. Gambar-gambar mereka kini banyak dijumpai di sudut jalan, halte, tembok gedung, rolling door, dll.

Mereka sendiri lebih senang disebut street artist (seniman jalanan) karena lebih banyak mencurahkan seninya di jalan. Biasanya mereka mulai mengebomb (menggambar) sekitar tengah malam, hal ini mereka lakukan untuk mengalihkan perhatian kepada sang penguasa jalan seperti polisi, trantib, beserta jajaran-jarannya. Kadang-kadang mereka harus lari tunggang langgang dari si kumis tebal. Tak arang mereka harus terkena denda atau bahkan harus masuk hotel prodeo. Graffiti kini juga sebagai bentuk popularitas komunitasnya, semakin banyak gambar mereka, semakin terkenallah mereka. Kini para komunitas graffiti di Ibu kota harus lebih berhati-hati untuk beraksi.

Lain halnya dengan Jakarta, di Yogyakarta graffiti lebih bebas. Karya-karya mereka dengan gamblang banyak ditemukan di ruas-ruas jalan. Tak ayal jika Yogyakarta sebagai kota pelajar disebut juga sebagai kota seni. Disini karya-karya seni justru menjadi bagian yang tak terpisahkan. Di yogya sendiri merupakan tempat tumbuh kembangnya graffiti. Dimana kota ini juga muncul komunitas-komunitas graffiti salah satunya adalah love hate love crew. Komunitas ini merupakan salah satu yang paling terkenal sampai ke luar Yogya.

Para pelaku graffiti kebanyakan para pecinta seni gambar dan kebanyakan dari mereka juga berkecimpung dalam dunia design. Beberapa dari mereka juga lulusan design grafis baik local maupun luar negeri. Selain graffiti kegiatan mereka sehari-hari meluangkan waktu dalam bidang advertising atau percetakan. Dari situ karya-karya mereka tidak hanya di tembok tapi juga lewat baju atau merchandise cantik yang banyak dijual di toko atau distro pelosok negeri ini. Graffiti memang menjadi bagian yang tak terpisahkan di zaman yang modern ini. Namun masyarakat belum banyak yang tahu akan keindahan graffiti yang sesungguhnya. “graffiti is not criminal”, harus dicamkan dalam diri masyarakat. Karena menurut para bomber graffiti, ini merupakan keindahan layaknya lukisan yang dilelang berjuta-juta harga.

Nike SB actually stands for Spring Bangers. Okay that was pretty corny but can you blame us for the goofy excitement with releases like this on deck? Get it deck? Skateboarding… Okay we’ll just stick to the facts.

Looks like the SB Zoom Classic will be arriving in a cool newsprint/blue sapphire color way. For starters the color Newsprint sounds awesome, gotta love the descriptive names. But the shoe itself is just as awesome. A full suede upper with perforated side panels and white accenting on the swoosh and outsole is met with sapphire blue contrast stitches and lining. Quite often seen as street pests and vandals, young graffiti artists in Jakarta are using the canvas to show what they do is truly art.
Twenty-two young Indonesian street artists collaborated with well-known French graffiti artist RCF1 to create “Surface Activities: L’Art Dans L’espace Urbain”.
The exhibition, which was born from a workshop ran by RCF1 with hand-picked artists from the street-graffiti scene, features a number of works painted on canvas rather than street corners and buildings.
Originally, the workshop was to take place over two days, but RCF1 says the young artists were so dedicated and enthusiastic they were nearly all completed in just one day.
While the urban culture of graffiti is more of a western tradition, these young people felt it was important to let their Jakarta-style show through their art. The exhibition shows the urban street culture of the west is on the rise in Jakarta.
While many of the colors and shadings are just as pristinely conquered as any you might find in Melbourne or Brooklyn, the Jakarta style of graffiti art seems to have a much darker edge, and a greater distinction between light and shade.
Colorful blocks and tags fade into demonic creatures and fear-inspiring blank eyeballs.
Human heads are depicted resting on the ledges of bloody baths, while yellow and purple color schemes sit alongside it on the canvas.
The idyllic tags, or scribbles of an artist’s “street name”, are also featured, making a clear distinction between graffiti as a means to see your name in paint, as well as a means to convey a message.
“Indonesian Pride” can be seen scribbled in the paint, as it is seen on the flags of youth in the street.
The urban culture in the streets is strong, as is the artists’ pride in their country.
Some canvases seem more like comic strips than graffiti, with caricatures depicting Barack Obama and Britney Spears, aliens and police officers.

Images of the devil and demonic creatures are quite prevalent, as are images of hantu (ghosts).
“Even though graffiti started in the west, we have our own style we are very proud of. As for technique and ability, RCF1 said we are not lacking when compared to the west, or any country which has had this kind of art form for much longer,” he said.
It is also important to note that these artists are just that: artists, he added.
“These kids are educated, talented artists with a message, they are not vandals.”
For the artists, it is important they convey a style that is uniquely Indonesian, he went on, adding artists were proud of the graffiti art in their own districts, be it Jakarta or Bandung.

Well-known Indonesian graffiti artist in Jakarta, AshTwo, said he too liked to display the Indonesian culture in his art, and show the quality of the art here is just as good as anywhere in the west.

He mentioned he had painted a large mural in Singapore in a legal, designated graffiti art area where he depicted the slogan “Indonesian Style” to show off his heritage.

ASHTWO wants to travel all over the world displaying his art, and very much enjoys painting his own name in different colors and fonts.

“I like writing my name and being creative with it. You see your own name up in all those colors, it’s like you’re famous.”

His work is influenced by many “old-school” American artists, but with an Indonesian flair, he commented. He has been a big fan of RCF1 for a great number of years and was very excited at the prospect of working with him.

“I have great respect for him, he has been practicing graffiti art for about 20 years.” When asked if he approved of young artists painting illegally, he replied “maybe”.

“On the street, you make your own rules,” he said.

/FlatStreet/Art hoped the exhibition would inspire young people to be artistic, and to develop an interest in graffiti art, in an artistic rather than vandalistic way.

“It doesn’t have to be on a wall, it doesn’t have to be messy, it can be anywhere you like, be creative, use a canvas,” he said.

“In some countries, graffiti is not art, graffiti is scribble. But here, it is expressing something. It might not be with a brush, but it is paint, and it is an amazing expression of creativity.”

The first thirty years of the Food Not Bombs movement.

Food Not Bombs is one of the fastest growing revolutionary movements and is gaining momentum throughout the world. There are hundreds of autonomous chapters sharing free vegetarian food with hungry people and protesting war and poverty. Food Not Bombs is not a charity. This energetic grassroots movement is active throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Food Not Bombs is organizing for peace and an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. For nearly 30 years the movement has worked to end hunger and has supported actions to stop the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, end exploitation and the destruction of the earth.

The first group was formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists. Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolent social change. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process. Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegan and vegetarian meals that are served in outside in public spaces to anyone without restriction. Each independent group also serves free meals at protests and other events. The San Francisco chapter has been arrested over 1,000 times in government's effort to silence its protest against the city's anti- homeless policies. Amnesty International states it will adopt those Food Not Bombs volunteers that are convicted as "Prisoners of Conscience" and will work for their unconditional release. Even though we are dedicated to nonviolence Food Not Bombs activists in the United States have been under investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Pentagon and other intelligence agencies. A number of Food Not Bombs volunteers have been arrested on terrorism charges.

Food Not Bombs is often the first to provide food and supplies to the survivors of disasters. During the first three days after the 1989 Earthquake, Food Not Bombs was the only organization in San Francisco providing hot meals to the survivors. Food Not Bombs was also the first to provide hot meals to the rescue workers responding to September 11th World Trade Center attacks. Food Not Bombs volunteers were among the first to provide food and help to the survivors of the Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Our volunteers organized a national collection program and delivered bus and truckloads of food and supplies to the gulf region. We were one of the only organizations sharing daily meals in New Orleans after Katrina. Food Not Bombs is now preparing for the economic crash organizing Food Not Lawns community gardens, housing the homeless with Homes Not Jails, organizing additional meals each week and starting new Food Not Bombs chapters.

Food Not Bombs works in coalition with groups like Earth First!, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Anarchist Black Cross, the IWW, Homes Not Jails, Anti Racist Action, In Defense of Animals, the Free Radio Movement and other organizations on the cutting edge of positive social change and resistance to the new global austerity program. Food Not Bombs provided the meals for the protesters at Camp Casey outside Bush's ranch in Texas. Volunteers also helped organize and shared meals at the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle and provide logistical support for many other anti-globalization actions. Kiev Food Not Bombs fed the tent city protest during the Orange Revolution and groups in Slovokia started animal rescue shelters in 24 cities. We are also sharing meals at protests responding to the global economic crisis. Many groups organize Really Really Free Markets giving away all kinds of items for free, planting Food Not Lawns community gardens and housing people with the Homes Not Jails project. Many chapters also organize Bikes Not Bombs programs collecting and repairing used bicycles to provide to people in low-income communities. We also provided meals to protesters at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in the United States. We will provide meals to the families of striking workers and help organize actions encouraging alternatives to the failure of capitalism.

Food Not Bombs activists are currently making plans to celebrate our 30th year of cooking for peace. Along with organizing the celebration each local chapter collects and distributes food every week and there are several other projects that support the Food Not Bombs movement. One collective called "A Food Not Bombs Menu." helps people find or start local chapters. They also maintain the website www.foodnotbombs.net, organize tours and support Food Not Bombs gatherings. They also provide books, t-shirts and other materials to promote the principles of Food Not Bombs. Another collective Food Not Bombs Publishing in Takoma Park, Maryland publishes books like "On Conflict and Consensus" which has been an important guide for group democracy. We hope you will join us in taking direct action towards creating a world free from domination, coercion and violence. Food is a right, not a privilege.

Bali is also called the Land of the Gods, due to its sheer beauty and miraculous sceneries. You can find interesting variety of people here, from the ones who prefer to surf in the beaches of Kuta, Sanur, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Dreamland, Nusa Dua and others, to people who love the serene view of the mountains and lakes in Batur, Kintamani, and Beratan Lake in Bedugul. Getting There

With the increasing number of direct flight to Bali from some other parts of the world, it makes it easier to go to Bali. From Bali, flight to Jakarta is about 1.5 hours, to Singapore and Perth (Australia) 2.5 and 3 hours, to Hong Kong about 4.5 hours, and to Sydney/Melbourne about 5.5 to 6 hours, with various airlines offering their services.

Just make sure you look for "Denpasar (DPS)" instead of "Bali" in airline time tables. It is the capital of Bali. And the international airport's name is Ngurah Rai.

Another way to reach the island is by ferry, crossing from Banyuwangi, East Java for 30 to 45 minutes to Ketapang. From Bali, you can also reach Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara through Padang Bay seaport with transit at Lembar seaport for a total of 4 hours of travel.

Getting Around

There are many modes of transport to help you get around in Bali. A variety of excellent half day, full day and overnight tour packages are available from your hotel desk or any of the numerous travel agents and tour operators which abound in Bali. Or you can find a car and driver who will also act as your guide.

Whilst walking about, you will be barraged with constant questions of "Transport, transport?". Competition is tight and many drivers know several languages. Tell the driver your desired route and negotiate a fee.

An important virtue to have while on the road in Bali is patience! Although the road system in the heavily populated areas is quite reasonable (condition wise) in comparison to other developing countries, it can be heavily congested at peak periods. Ceremonial processions often overtake the whole road so if you're caught behind a procession, enjoy the colorful experience.

Too many to mention. You'll realize it soon after arriving. Part of the miracle of Bali is that, even in modern life, most Balinese still adhere to their unique traditions, especially the Hindu ones. Spirits are respected and sometimes worshipped, and rituals have integrated themselves into the daily lives of the local people. Many artists consider Bali both as a haven and heaven. A number of beaches in this island are the favorite resorts for surfers. While some others offer variety of water sports or family recreation, such as banana boats, parasailing or jetskiing.

In the northern part of Bali, there are Kuta Beach, Sanur, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Dreamland, and Nusa Dua, to name a few. While on the other side there are the attractive Lovina, Amed, and Tulamben beach. For mountainous nuance, devotees will find Batur Lake at Kintamani and Beratan Lake at Bedugul to their liking. Other than Bali, there are number of small islands nearby like Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. Both small beautiful islands also have nature fascinating sceneries.

To Stay

Many beautiful resorts offer fine lodgings. Most of the starred hotels are located near the beach. Otherwise, they usually have their own private spots at certain beaches. You can find them easily at popular spots like Kuta or Sanur.

If you're in a serene highland like Ubud, forget starred hotels. You're there to embrace the atmosphere. Just pick one of the small lodgings lining up the streets. And even the smallest one's ready to make you feel welcome.

During the 2007 Ubud Readers and Writers Festival, a man in a wheelchair checked in at a small inn on Monkey Forest. He had some difficulties in navigating through the stairs to his bungalow. He then left for the Festival. When he returned at night, the owner had already paved an ascending lane to his bungalow. That's a typical Balinese hospitality.
